Check these yourself

  • Glasses: not allowed in U.S. photos. Where they are allowed, no glare and no tinted lenses.
  • Expression: neutral with your mouth closed, or a natural smile where the rules allow it.
  • Head covering: none, unless worn every day for religious or medical reasons.
  • Recent and unedited: taken in the last 6 months, with no filters or retouching.

What the passport photo checker measures

The checker finds your face and measures the photo against the official size for the document you pick. It covers the parts of the rules a computer can measure reliably.

Head size and eye line

Chin-to-crown height in millimetres at print size, and for U.S. photos the eye height of 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom edge.

Frame and centering

Whether the photo has the official shape, such as square for 2 × 2 inches or 35 × 45 mm, and whether the head is centered.

Background

Whether the backdrop is plain, light enough for the document, and free of a shadow on one side.

Lighting and pose

Even light across the face, a level head, looking straight at the camera, and both eyes open.

Resolution

Whether enough pixels remain after cropping to print at 300 DPI and meet the digital upload minimum.

DS-160 upload file

For U.S. visa photos, whether the file is a JPEG of 240 KB or less, as the DS-160 uploader requires.

Fix it or retake it

Each failed check says whether the photo can be corrected or needs to be taken again.

Fixed without a new photo

Photo shape, head size, eye line, centering, background and the DS-160 file can all be corrected in the passport photo maker, with a free watermarked preview first.

Needs a new photo

Uneven light, a tilted or turned head, closed eyes and low resolution come from how the photo was taken. Retake it facing a window with the camera at eye level.

Photo sizes the checker supports

Head-size ranges come from the same size library the passport photo maker uses.
